If you want to learn how to earn money from home from your own website or by working as an affiliate, you have to decide what Internet advertising method works for you. Ask yourself whether you want to use paid or free advertising. Both ways work. Paid advertising costs you money and free advertising costs you time. 

Let's take a look at the two types of advertising. 

Paid Advertising 

1. Pop Ups. Although promoted as an excellent way to get people to sign up for your opt-in list or to buy a product, this form of advertising is controversial. This is because while it does work, it also irks visitors because it is so intrusive. Many browsers now have a feature to stop pop-ups and people often have these turned on. Unless you are sure that your pop-up makes an irresistible offer, it is better to spend your advertising money in other ways. 

2. Podcasts. These are expensive, but highly effective. People would rather listen to a podcast than read an article with the same information. Podcasts work well if you already have a well-established list and have great products to sell. 

3. Paying the search engines and directories. Sponsored ads and pay-per-click ads create first page placement for major keywords and create instant traffic to your website. Google and Yahoo are the best places to place these ads. Unfortunately, the ROI is often questionable because, unless you have a high conversion rate on your website, your ad will cost more than the sales you generate from it. 

Free Advertising 

1. Blogging. 

Blogging is one of the most popular ways of getting free traffic provided you post regularly and use keyword-rich articles in your posts. It also helps to be part of a blogging network. Setting up a blog can be done free or at a very low cost. 

2. Submit your website information to search engines and directories. 

Both big and small search engines and directories allow you to submit your website URL to them for indexing. 

3. Backlinks. 

One of the most powerful traffic generating methods is the use of backlinks. By putting your website information on other people's website, visitors have a way to follow the links to your website. It is almost like putting up text ads. There are many ways to get backlinks, including link exchanges, article writing, video promotion, and forum marketing.
